Maria Kalman was born in a hot, sandy place far away from any ice. She moved to NYC and proceeded to grow up. She is the author/ illustrator of ten childrens books, including Max Makes a Million and Swami on Rye. Her illustrations have appeared on the cover of The New Yorker, The New York Times, and other publications having nothing to do with New York. She has recently completed murals for Grand Central Station and is currently working on a childrens book for the Whitney Museum.
